Vastu for the Home Entrance

The entrance receives more attention in traditional Vastu than almost any other part of a plan. The reason is structural rather than symbolic: the entrance is where movement, light and air enter, and everything the tradition says about circulation begins there.

What the tradition looks at

**Orientation.** Which direction the main door faces is the first fact recorded about any plan. It is not a verdict — every orientation is discussed in the tradition, and none is treated as beyond consideration.

**Approach.** The path leading to the door matters as much as the door. Traditional guidance concerns whether the approach is clear and whether it is obstructed by heavy or blocking objects.

**Threshold.** The transition from outside to inside is treated as a distinct zone rather than an afterthought — clean, defined and unobstructed.

**What sits immediately inside.** The first few feet inside a door belong to movement. Storage, shoe piles and accumulated clutter there are read as an obstruction of the entrance itself.

Practical, non-structural attention

Almost nobody can move a front door. What can usually be changed:

· clearing the approach path and the area immediately inside

· moving shoe racks and bulk storage out of the direct entry line

· making sure the door opens fully without striking furniture

· keeping the entrance well lit, since light and movement are read together

· repairing a door that sticks, drags or creaks — traditional guidance consistently prefers a door that works smoothly

Every one of these is reversible and requires no construction.

Where the entrance meets the elements

The entrance is usually a movement zone, which places it in Air's territory in traditional terms. Depending on which direction it faces, it will also sit in a zone read alongside another element — a west-facing entrance sits in Space's zone, a south-east entrance in Fire's.
