The Five Elements of Vastu

Traditionally linked with movement, circulation and the quality of exchange in a space.

In traditional Vastu, Vayu is understood as the element of movement — of air, breath and circulation. Spaces are read for how freely they allow movement, both physically and in the flow of daily activity.

Traditionally associated with the East and North-West directions.

Traditionally linked with energy, transformation and visible activity.

Agni is described in traditional Vastu as the element of heat, light and transformation. It is the element most often discussed in relation to the South and South-East of a space.

Traditionally associated with the South and South-East directions.

Traditionally linked with calm, continuity and accumulation.

Jal is understood as the element of flow and stillness together. Traditional texts discuss it in relation to the North and North-East of a plan.

Traditionally associated with the North and North-East directions.

Traditionally linked with stability, weight and grounding.

Prithvi is described as the element of mass and support — the settled, load-bearing quality of a space. It is most often discussed in relation to the South-West.

Traditionally associated with the South-West direction.

Traditionally linked with openness, volume and the centre of a plan.

Aakash, sometimes translated as ether or space, is described as the element of volume and emptiness — the room a space leaves for everything else to exist within it.
