What Is Vayu Tattva?

Vayu Tattva is the Air element as traditional Vastu describes it. *Tattva* means principle or essence, so Vayu Tattva is not simply the air in a room — it is the principle of movement itself.

What Vayu describes

Air is the element the tradition associates with everything that moves through a space rather than sitting in it. That includes literal air movement, but also the movement of people between rooms, the exchange of conversation and activity, and the general sense of whether a space circulates or stalls.

Vayu is traditionally read alongside the **East** and the **North-West**. In many descriptions the North-West in particular is discussed in terms of movement, transit and things that do not stay put.

How Air is read in a plan

The practical questions the tradition raises around Air are direct:

· **Does air move through?** Cross-ventilation — an opening that lets air in and another that lets it out — is the clearest expression of Vayu in a plan.

· **Do people move through?** Corridors, entrances and the paths between daily-use rooms belong to Air's territory. Blocked circulation is read as a disturbance of Vayu.

· **Does the space stay in motion?** Rooms that hold stagnant clutter, especially in movement zones, are traditionally treated as working against the element.

Practical, non-structural attention

Most homes cannot be reopened or replanned. What can usually be changed is smaller:

· keeping movement paths physically clear

· opening cross-ventilation where two openings exist and are simply never used together

· moving accumulated storage out of transit zones

· avoiding heavy, immovable furniture in the parts of the plan the tradition treats as movement zones

None of this requires construction, and all of it is reversible.
