How to Choose a Vastu Painting

A Vastu painting is chosen the same way any Vastu remedy is chosen: by working from the space outward, not from the object inward. The subject of a painting matters, but only once you know which wall you are choosing it for.

Step one: find the direction

Stand at the centre of the room, find north with a compass, and identify which direction the wall you have in mind faces. This single fact does more to narrow the choice than any other consideration.

Step two: identify the element

Traditional Vastu reads each direction alongside an element: Air with the East and North-West, Fire with the South and South-East, Water with the North and North-East, Earth with the South-West, and Space with the West and the centre of the plan. Once you know the direction, you know which element the tradition associates with it.

Step three: match the subject to the element

This is where the subject of a painting becomes relevant. A painting built around flowing water reads as a Water subject. A painting built around heat, strength and intensity reads as a Fire subject. A painting of stone, land or settled forms reads as Earth.

The traditional caution is against mismatching: placing an intense Fire subject in a zone the tradition treats as cool and still, or a heavy Earth subject in a zone it treats as light and open.

Step four: check the practical details

· **Size relative to the wall.** A painting that crowds a wall works against the openness the tradition values, particularly near the centre of a plan.

· **Height.** Traditional practice favours placement at eye level rather than very high or very low.

· **Subject matter you actually want to live with.** A painting you find unsettling is not a good remedy regardless of its mapping.
